Thank you for deciding to make a gift to the Boise State University wrestling program.  Your donation to our wrestling program will directly benefit the team in many ways, including summer school scholarships, equipment, recruitment and various other needs in support of our coaches and student-athletes.

On behalf of the Broncos, thank you for your support.

Respectfully,

Greg Randall

Donating to a College Wrestling Program

Donors of wrestling can donate directly to the wrestling program, through what's referred to as the enhancement fund.  This is a seperate fund that is NOT shared with the rest of the athletic department.  Your dollars go directly into the wrestling enhancement fund, not the general fund.

At Boise State University, we have two main ways to donate. Our big boosters all donate to our enhancement fund. It is for BSU Wrestling only, and no other sports can touch it. The wrestling coaches can then use it for any shortfall in the budget (travel, recruiting, scholarships, equipment, salaries).

The second way is to donate to the Bronco Wrestling Club. This is our freestyle Club. We pay our volunteer coach's salary out of this, as well as financing trips to US Nationals, FILA JUNIORS, Clansmen International, Sunkist, Dave Schultz Int'l, University Nationals.

We fundraise for the Bronco Wrestling Club with the annual BWC Golf outing in August.  We also set up other smaller fundraisers throughout the course of the year.  Rick Rietman is the President of the BWC.  Jackie Smith is the treasurer.

The shortfall of ALL programs out west is TRAVEL budget. While MIDWEST Schools can go to any tournament and dual anyone they want, Boise State often has to be very strategic in its scheduling, making for long, grueling road trips (example wrestling in CA for 1 long trip instead of taking 2 seperate trips).

The MIDWEST schools limiting factor is DATES of competition.  The closest BSU opponent is Utah Valley, who are a 5 hour drive.  How many schools are within a 5 hour range in Pennsylvania?  Maximum DATES allowed is 16.

Mid Major schools don't have enough MONEY to use all of their dates. Some only used 14 of their dates this year. Next year athletic departments across the nation are facing budget cuts, often up to 10% (recession is cited). The wrestling budget at the university level is usually between $250,000 and $750,000.  The University of Oregon was rumored to have above a $600,000 per year wrestling budget before it was dropped (unconfirmed number).  One of the reasons it was dropped was "supposedly" lack of finances.  Meanwhile, if those budget numbers are correct, they had enough of a budget to run 2 West Coast teams.  Most mid-major standard schools are in the $300,000 per year budget range.

The parts of a standard University budget include: 1) Travel 2) Scholarships (9.9 Maximum across the nation for DIVISION I wrestling) 3) Equipment 4) Recruiting 5) Coaching Salaries

1) Travel:  It often costs Universities out west between $45k and $60k per year to travel to competitions.

2) Scholarships: Do the math at 9.9 multiplied by the complete cost of Tuition, Fees, Course Required Text Books, and Room & Board at any given University or College.  If a school costs $25,000 a year to attend, and you multiplied that by 9.9, you would know how much a school spends each year on scholarships.

3)  Equipment:  Shoes, Head Gear, Warmups, Singlets, Knee Pads, etc.  Also factor in Wrestling Mats every so often (10-20 years). Luckily sponsors help keep these costs down. MATMAN wrestling company, ASICS, Cliff Keen all do their share.

4) Recruiting:  How much does it cost coaches to fly around to do home visits to recruits?  See them at state tourneys?  Fly them to their University for official visits?  I guess it depends upon your University's Budget.  I know I didn't fly ANYWHERE to recruit ANYONE this year, though I have in years past.  I probably won't next year, either.

5) Coaches Salaries: Head Coaches in bigger conferences often make more than $90,000 per year.  Head Assistants often make over $50,000 per year.  Assistants often make over $30,000 per year.  Volunteer Assistants are NOT allowed to receive any benefits directly from the University.  They are usually paid through a Freestyle Wrestling Club.  Most smaller schools don't have the budget to fully pay 3 coaches, let alone four.  Bigger schools can use their camp money and club fundraising to pay multiple coaches (strength and conditioning, administrative assistant, etc)

At smaller schools, the coaches run the wrestling camps. The assistant coaches also have to hit the road all summer long as camp clinicians to supplement their income. This is time that could be spent with their wrestlers, helping them improve. When a program is fully funded, the assistant coaches can afford to just stay around and work with their guys all summer long.

As for booster's buying houses, no preferential treatment can be given to athletes in that manner. It's better and cheaper to just donate to the enhancement fund, and its LEGAL.

The following is the BWC mission statement:

Bronco Wrestling Club Mission Statement:

What Does Your Money Provide?

Bronco Wrestling Club funding allows the wrestlers to attend training camps, which translates into better performance on the mat.  Additional training strengthens the entire wrestling program by increasing the level of competition.

Bronco Wrestling Club funding provides assistance to former Bronco wrestlers who wish to continue their training at Boise State.  Wrestlers are only as good as their training partners, and thus maintaining a high level of competition in the practice room helps each individual, along with the program, to grow stronger.

Bronco Wrestling Club funding also allows former Bronco wrestlers to compete in additional competitions on the national and international level.

Below is a projected budget of expenses for the next two years.
